UWI Trinidad

I was one of a group of 10 who shared a house whilst studying for the postgraduate Diploma in Agriculture in 1965/66. John Cropper later to become Angela’s husband was one of my house mates. However through another of our colleagues named Andrew, I met Angela and her family in San Fernando and subsequently went out with Angela a couple of times. I returned to the UK in June 1966 after graduating and then had a working career in Agriculture mainly in Africa and Latin America. I met my wife Judy in Kenya in 1968, a year later we were married and our first daughter Elizabeth was born just before we left Kenya in 1974. Our second daughter Cherry was born in Costa Rica where I then worked in 1976.

The Country I know best is Kenya where Judy’s father was a settler farmer who after leaving in 1978 sold his farm to 3 prominent Kenyans with the consent of President Kenyatta (one mzee to another!j. In those days I was employed by the British Government but in the second half of my career I was a frequent visitor to Kenya for ngo work.

After some years and sadly not long before her death I learned that Angela was head of UNEP in Nairobi and we arranged to meet up either in Nairobi or in Bath in the UK which is where we now live and which she visited from time to time. Very sadly that was not to be the case.

I visited the Caribbean 4 years ago for a cruise of the islands which did not include Trinidad but I had planned to jump ship for a couple of days to get to Trinidad. Unfortunately the ship’s itinerary was changed mid voyage making the logistics impossible. I had also tried to make contact with Angela’s family but received no response.

I still have fond memories of Angela who was one of my first girl friends and for whom I have great admiration on having reached such great heights in her shortened life on the planet. I am doing my best to combat climate change using my privileged work experience. I just wish that I could have shared it with Angela before she passed away.
