Goodbye to a boss, mentor and friend

I had applied for a job to be Angela’s Special Assistant at UNEP. At the outset, I was not particularly interested in the job. But I was curious and impressed by the staff at UNEP handling the application, so I did my best to get through the steps. The final step was the interview with Angela herself. When the interview was over, I wanted the job more than anything else in the world. After a short time with Angela, I knew that this was my chance to work with one of the truly great. Angela had easily won me over with her charm, charisma, intelligence, empathy and professionalism. She was a demanding boss, and set the bar very high. There were times when we were terrified of walking into her office, should we have let her down in any way. But even when we inevitably did, she would let us know in the most professional and caring way, always making sure we went away feeling inspired to do better rather than down-trodden and demotivated. Angela was the most inspirational boss, colleague and friend imaginable. She had a unique capacity to lead without making herself the center of attention. Leading by example she taught me the value and privilege of serving as opposed to building a career. She also taught me how to cut and lay out a fruit-platter, to tie a scarf, to get into a high car with a tight skirt, to arrange flowers, to best pack my suitcase for professional travel etc etc… because these were of course also some of Angela’s many many skills. But most of all, I hope she taught me how to be a better person. And by trying to live up to the standards she set for herself, and more often than not exceeded, I hope, in a very small way, to continue to make the world a better place in her name. The biggest challenge when working with Angela, even when she was sick, was to try to get her to take some rest. I hope she can rest in peace now, and take a little bit of comfort in the fact that she has inspired all the people writing on this page, and countless others, to try to carry on her work.
