Angela Cropper’s mission was Olympian in its magnitude, a marathon ran by one person for a larger worldly good. The torch she bore for humanity’s gain was carried purposefully and resolutely to a higher ground, powered by her elevated consciousness about the necessity of global environmental security and a selfless march toward the fulfillment of this goal. In the early years of this pursuit I was honoured to join Angela in some of the regional strategizing on environmental matters; and we shared lively insights into how to affect the policy environment and shape a future in which responsible decisions would steer the fragile journey towards environmental protection. On hearing the news of the sudden passing of her son Devanand, I had hastened to spend those painful moments with Angela and John at their home in Cascade. I remember John’s counsel at the time: (Alicia), the mountains are still majestic, the sun still shines, and Nature continues to bestow her graces on us. Even though Devanand is not with us. Angela’s life celebrates a woman of unswerving commitment, tirelessly reaching for that majestic mountain. She was that regal presence, towering as a mountain of inspiration, and steeped in her conviction that a better world was possible. She touched me as a professional and as a friend. Her message that came so poignantly on the news of her death was, “We have to continue this work”. It is a resounding call to action, and the least we can do to honour a champion of extraordinary wisdom and nobility; a woman who will be forever remembered for her generous love for humanity and her determination to go the distance in making a difference in people’s lives.
